When it comes to upgrading your firearm with a high-performance trigger, Geissele has established itself as a go-to brand for shooters looking to enhance their shooting experience. Among the many triggers they offer, two have stood out for their unique characteristics and ability to reduce split times: the SSP Trigger and the SD3G Trigger.
But with both triggers gaining popularity, a common question arises: What exactly is the difference between the SSP and the SD3G? While they might look nearly identical and even share similar pull weights, these two triggers have distinct feels and functions that cater to different shooting needs. In our latest YouTube video, we dive into a quick comparison of these two triggers to help you decide which might be the better fit for your setup.
SSP Trigger: Geissele’s First True Single-Stage Trigger
The SSP (Single Stage Precision) was designed to be Geissele’s first true single-stage trigger, and it delivers on that promise with precision and reliability. This trigger has no take-up, meaning that as soon as your finger touches the trigger, you’re right on the wall, ready to break the shot.
With a pull weight of about 3-3.75 pounds, the SSP allows for a clean and crisp break, with no noticeable overtravel. It’s one of the best feeling breaks we’ve encountered on a single-stage trigger. The reset is also incredibly positive and short, requiring just a few millimeters of travel to reset back at the wall. This makes the SSP an excellent choice for shooters who need a trigger that can handle both speed and precision.
SD3G Trigger: A Unique Hybrid Design
The SD3G (Super Dynamic 3-Gun) takes a different approach with its unique hybrid design. Unlike the SSP, the SD3G doesn’t have a discernible wall. Instead, it features what Geissele describes as a “rolling break.” This hybrid pull feels like a cross between a traditional two-stage and single-stage trigger. The hammer drops after the trigger is pulled a few millimeters rearward, providing a very distinct and fast reset.
Geissele includes two different springs with the SD3G, giving you the option to choose between a 3-5lb or a 4.5-5.5lb pull weight. The reset on the SD3G is especially noteworthy, as it’s incredibly positive and almost feels like it’s forcing your trigger finger forward. This makes it one of the fastest resetting triggers we’ve tested, ideal for situations where speed is of the essence.
Which Trigger Should You Choose?
So, which of these high-performance triggers should you choose? Here’s what we recommend based on the applications we believe each trigger is best suited for:
- SSP Trigger: The SSP is a fantastic general-purpose trigger. Its clear wall, clean break, and solid reset make it easy to shoot fast while still being precise when needed. If you’re looking for a versatile trigger that can perform well in a variety of situations, the SSP is likely the better option.
- SD3G Trigger: The SD3G, on the other hand, is perfect for those who prioritize speed above all else. Its highly pronounced reset and rolling break make it ideal for scenarios where rapid fire is crucial, such as in 3-Gun competitions. However, due to its lack of a distinct break, we wouldn’t recommend it for precision or long-range shooting.
Both the SSP and SD3G triggers bring something unique to the table. Whether you’re in the market for a trigger that offers precision and reliability or one that’s built for speed, Geissele’s got you covered.
